Areas we cover

  • All consumer transactions are protected by basic consumer rights and business must provide minimum information up front. We can advise on the requirements for distance and doorstep selling as well as traditional retail store sales.

Business practices must not be unfair or deceptive to consumers. This covers all activities from manufacture, marketing, sales, service delivery, aftersales services and dealing with complaints.

  • Protecting your business and ideas using intellectual property protection is vital for secure growth. We can register your trademarks, advise on copyright and other protections for your products, and deal with any infringements.

  • All consumer products must be safe. High risk products like cosmetics, toys, electrical equipment and chemicals have specific legislation, and other products are captured by general requirements. We can review products, advise on the requirements, develop your compliance systems and respond to issues.

  • Food composition, standards and labelling are covered by a wide range of legislation. We can review food products, advise on labelling and analytical testing, develop your compliance systems and respond to issues

We have a strong and provable track record of success

We’ve helped hundreds of businesses understand the legislation, codes of practice, and standards that affect them – so they can implement and move forward.

What’s the worst that can happen?

Most breaches of trading standards legislation are criminal offences and can result in a fine (in some cases an unlimited amount). For more serious offences, courts can sentence to up to 2 years imprisonment.

Other breaches have civil consequences such as contracts being unenforceable, claims for unsafe or faulty products and liability for damages.

Morally, you want to do the right thing

Legally, you need to do the right thing

Financially, you can’t afford to get it wrong

  • Trading Standards regulates over 400 pieces of legislation including the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. Do you really have the time, knowledge, and resources to understand how these areas apply to your business?

Failure to understand the law – specifically: how it applies to you – could result in harsh penalties. That’s without mentioning the hidden cost caused by damage to your reputation.

 Wouldn’t you rather…

…understand the law so you can manage your own compliance moving forward?

…develop team knowledge so your employees know exactly what’s needed of them?

…invest in a tailored training package so you can address the challenges of your sector?

  • If only you knew what you needed to know. That way you’d better understand the risks to your business and could avoid inadvertent breaches. Fortunately, we can fill in those crucial knowledge gaps and show you – and your teams – how to manage compliance in the long term.

Our structured training courses – run by trading standards consultants with extensive knowledge of consumer law – break down complex legal terminology into accessible language. Armed with a precise understanding of your legal obligations you’ll emerge with a plan of action that’ll help you anticipate issues before they become problems.

Whether you want to deepen your knowledge of selling online, better understand consumer rights, or learn how to deal with consumers more responsibly, we’ll design a solution to help you achieve your goals.

  • Identifying your compliance risks is our priority. By getting to know you, we’ll be able to protect your business and the needs of its customers.

    We’ll do this by…

    1. Reviewing your business, its sector, what it sells, and how

    2. Advising and supporting, so you can take the next best steps

    3. Developing your knowledge through tailored training courses

    4. Auditing performance to ensure continuous compliance

    5. Responding to issues by helping you adapt to change or solve issues

Our compliance RADAR packages ultimately ensure that your products, services, and practices are safe. Why not talk to one of our trading standards consultants to find out more and take the next step.

A food manufacturer must check its products are correctly labelled, traceable and allergy-compliant. An online travel agent should check its descriptions are accurate and its cancellation policies fair. But these are just X and Y variables. No matter what you sell, whatever your industry or customers, regulation must form the cornerstone of your business. If it doesn’t, the consequences could be severe.
